The three levels of the certification program identify the globally-recognized levels of maturity of the BA profession.
This core BA certification progression will encourage BA professionals to grow and develop in their profession and be recognized for growth and development from the start of their career through to retirement.
As individuals move along their career progression, their competencies will grow and develop. At each ley milestone, the individual will have developed or gained a different level of competency that can be recognized, thus providing a clear differentiation between certification levels. The certification level encourages a BA professional to seek growth through specific learning and development to support them in achieving the desired level. IIBA certification programs will assess and measure an individuals’ competencies at any given level thus ensuring the BA professional and employer knows what is expected at each level.
Professional certification is a designation earned by an individual identifying that they have demonstrated a standard level of skills, experience, and expertise within their field. Level 2 – CCBA®, and Level 3 – CBAP® are considered professional certifications because they each have a unique work experience requirement to be eligible and the exam tests their application of the competencies required at each level. Level 1 – ECBA™ is a certificate because it does not require work experience, and it only requires professional development hours to be eligible.
Contact information of someone who can validate that you took a course, in the event your application is audited by IIBA, must be entered. If it's an online course, then you may have registered through your company's HR department so you can provide the HR person's contact information instead.
Applications are assessed immediately upon submission. You will not be able to submit your application unless you have met all the eligibility requirements. Once your online application shows that all requirements have been met, you will be able to submit your application. You will immediately receive an email stating that you are either approved OR approved pending audit. If you are approved, the e-mail will contain instructions on paying the exam fee so you can schedule it.
Random application audits are performed for all levels of the core business analysis certification program. Audits include validating the work experience, professional development and references submitted in your application.
If your application notice is "approved pending audit", this means your application will be audited within one month.
Applicants and certification recipients may receive a request on behalf of the IIBA Certification Body to validate any information on their application form and/or recertification application. It is the applicant’s or recipient’s responsibility to obtain and provide verification of any statements made within an application form and/or recertification application.
If your audit is not passed, the reason will be communicated to you via email and your application will not be approved. All fees paid will be forfeited. You may reapply only after you have remedied the reasons for the audit not passing. You may also appeal the Certification Body’s decision to fail the audit of the application by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
An extenuating circumstance is an event or hardship that would lead you to request an application extension, to reschedule or cancel an exam at no extra charge, or to request an extension to your recertification cycle. More details here.
Unfortunately, your paid exam or exam rewrite fee cannot be transferred to your next application. Therefore, you have 12 months from the day IIBA received your exam payment to request a refund. After such time, your exam or exam rewrite fee payment will become non-refundable. To request a refund of your exam or exam rewrite fee, please e-mail email@example.com. Please include a reason for your refund request.
Indicate in the description field for the project that it involves sensitive company information and then provide only as much information as possible without breaching the privacy.
Professional Development refers to training and/or education that will assist you in further developing your skills and/or knowledge for a given area.
IIBA does not use or refer to Professional Development Units (PDUs) instead, we use the term Professional Development hours (or PD hours). When applying online, you enter in your professional development hours in the Contact Hours field. Please note: 1 hour of Professional Development = 1 Contact Hour.
Applicants and recipients may be randomly selected for audit to validate work experience, professional development and other information provided when they apply and/or recertify.
ECBA professional development can consist of any of the following activities:
Important Note: The content of these professional development activities must be aligned with the BABOK® Guide v3.0.
For a course to qualify towards the Professional Development requirement, it must meet the following criteria:
All courses that are part of our Endorsed Education Provider (EEP™) program automatically qualify towards the professional development requirement for the certificate or for any certification. This is because they have already been assessed and validated by IIBA to ensure they meet the above criteria.
To verify if any courses already taken are a part of our Endorsed Education Provider (EEP™) program, you can perform a search on our website from within the Education and Training section.
Online courses hold the same weight as classroom courses for the Professional Development (PD) requirement. All courses, whether classroom or online, must meet the professional development criteria for the certification level within the handbook, and you must be able to provide proof of taking the course in case your application is selected for random audit.
Delivering training and general coaching during a training session is considered part of the training being delivered and therefore, cannot be counted as work experience for certification. However, follow-up coaching and consulting outside of the training course for a participant’s specific work situation would count.
The best way to document this, since this type of work may be provided across various organizations is to combine all hours into one project. For the contact information, you will need to provide the name of a person at your organization that can verify that (1) you provide this service to course participants and (2) the number of hours you generally spent providing this service.
There will not be specific exam questions that test on the Perspectives or Underlying Competencies sections.
To complete the application, you must enter, into your application, two references: either a career manager, client (internal or external), or CBAP® recipient. IIBA will only ask for endorsement from your references if your application is selected for a random audit. If your application is selected for a random audit, it is the applicant’s responsibility to do any necessary follow-up to ensure that the references reply to IIBA in a timely fashion.
These references must meet the following conditions:
The available payment methods are as follows:
For the core BA certifications (i.e. ECBA, CCBA, CBAP), if you have paid the exam or exam rewrite fee and you are unable to take the exam, a refund for the exam or exam rewrite fee is only possible up to 12 months from the day IIBA® received your payment. For the IIBA®-AAC and IIBA®-CBDA, a refund of the exam or exam rewrite fee is only possible up to 6 months from the day IIBA received your payment. After such time, your exam or exam rewrite fee payment will be non-refundable.
Any fees required to cancel your exam still apply. In some situations, the Exam Cancellation/Reschedule/Missed or Late policy may supersede this policy.
To request a refund of your exam or exam rewrite fee payment, you must first cancel your scheduled exam with the certification exam provider, and then e-mail your refund request to the Certification team at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please provide us with a reason for your refund request.
Please note: The application fee for our core BA certifications is non-refundable.
It really depends on the individual. The following, however, are some exam preparation tips:
Note: IIBA does not, in any way, represent that completing the above guarantees success at passing a certificate or certification exam.
IIBA is a not a training provider although we do provide the certification exams. We have Endorsed Education Providers (EEPs™) which are training providers whose courses have been assessed and validated by IIBA to ensure they meet the professional development criteria for certification. Visit the our Education and Training page to find an endorsed provider and/or course that meets your needs. IIBA does not provide EEP and/or endorsed course recommendations
This includes information on verifying system compatibility, exam registration, identification verification procedures, exam rules, cancellation/rescheduling policy and much more.
Once your online application is approved, you need to pay the exam fee in order to be eligible to schedule the exam. Once your exam fee is received by IIBA, you will receive an e-mail confirming payment with instructions to schedule your exam. At this point, you can proceed to schedule your exam with PSI for ECBA™, IIBA®-AAC and IIBA®-CBDA or with Prometric for CCBA® and CBAP®. Note: to schedule your exam with Prometric, you will require the Eligibility ID number in your confirmation email.
The ECBA, IIBA®-AAC and IIBA®-CBDA exams are offered via remote online proctoring through PSI so you take it from your own computer. The CCBA and CBAP exams are taken via computer based testing at dedicated Prometric test centers.
Please review our policy within our Exam Preparation website.
Please review our exam cancellation and rescheduling policy within our Exam Preparation website.
You must wait for IIBA to receive your exam result from the testing provider and upload it to your IIBA profile before you can pay and schedule your rewrite exam. This may take up to 24 hours from your exam day. As soon as your score is uploaded into your IIBA profile account, you will receive an e-mail from IIBA instructing you on your next steps to pay the exam rewrite fee and to schedule your rewrite of the exam. To schedule your rewrite, you are required to pay the rewrite fee to IIBA first.
From your exam date, it can take up to 1 business day for IIBA to process your result from the testing provider. Once this is done, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from IIBA and, within two weeks, your certificate of achievement via e-mail.
Once you have scheduled your exam at a test center, you will receive a confirmation notice via email with the exam logistics almost immediately. In addition, you will receive an appointment reminder via email two days prior to the exam date.
If you experience an error while trying to schedule your exam, please contact email@example.com.

No, IIBA does not accommodate for translators. For any given language that an IIBA exam is delivered, the expectation is that the candidate is fluent in that language.
These would be considered as extenuating circumstances warranting an extension to recertify, and therefore would be treated as such. Find out more about other applicable extenuating circumstances and the process for requesting an extension.
The recertification requirements and process will be finalized and communicated to all IIBA stakeholders as well as published on our website by end of 2019
