Multi-Level, Competency-Based Certification Program

Why does the Core BA Certification program consist of three levels?

The three levels of the certification program identify the globally-recognized levels of maturity of the BA profession.

This core BA certification progression will encourage BA professionals to grow and develop in their profession and be recognized for growth and development from the start of their career through to retirement.

What is the significance of IIBA certification programs being competency-based?

As individuals move along their career progression, their competencies will grow and develop.  At each ley milestone, the individual will have developed or gained a different level of competency that can be recognized, thus providing a clear differentiation between certification levels.  The certification level encourages a BA professional to seek growth through specific learning and development to support them in achieving the desired level. IIBA certification programs will assess and measure an individuals’ competencies at any given level thus ensuring the BA professional and employer knows what is expected at each level.

What is the difference between a Professional Certification and a Certificate?

Professional certification is a designation earned by an individual identifying that they have demonstrated a standard level of skills, experience, and expertise within their field.  Level 2 – CCBA®, and Level 3 – CBAP® are considered professional certifications because they each have a unique work experience requirement to be eligible and the exam tests their application of the competencies required at each level.  Those who achieve certification receive a certification license number. Level 1 – ECBA™ is a certificate because it does not require work experience, and it only requires professional development hours to be eligible.

Do I need to be a member of IIBA to apply for certification or to recertify?

No, you do not need to be an IIBA member to apply for certification.

There are many benefits to IIBA membership. These include, but are not limited to, discounted certification exam fees, discounted recertification fees, a free PDF copy of the BABOK® Guide, and much more.

Core BA Certification Program (ECBA, CCBA and CBAP) - Application Process

I do not have details such as contact name, phone number and email, etc. for my professional development courses.  How should I proceed with entering this information in my application?

Contact information of someone who can validate that you took a course, in the event your application is audited by IIBA, must be entered.  If it's an online course, then you may have registered through your company's HR department so you can provide the HR person's contact information instead.

After I submit my application how long will I have to wait to find out if I'm approved to sit for the exam?

Applications are assessed immediately upon submission and payment of the application fee. You will not be able to submit your application unless you have met all the eligibility requirements. Once your online application shows that all requirements have been met, you will be able to submit your application. You will immediately receive an email stating that you are either approved OR approved pending audit. If you are approved, the e-mail will contain instructions on paying the exam fee so you can schedule it.

What if I am selected for an audit?

Random application audits are performed for all levels of the core business analysis certification program. Audits include validating the work experience, professional development and references submitted in your application.

If your application notice is "approved pending audit", this means your application will be audited within one month.

Applicants and certification recipients may receive a request on behalf of the IIBA Certification Body to validate any information on their application form and/or recertification application. It is the applicant’s or recipient’s responsibility to obtain and provide verification of any statements made within an application form and/or recertification application.

If your audit is not passed, the reason will be communicated to you via email and your application will not be approved. All fees paid will be forfeited. You may reapply only after you have remedied the reasons for the audit not passing. You may also appeal the Certification Body’s decision to fail the audit of the application by e-mailing

How do I request an application extension?

You can request an application extension by e-mailing Only extenuating circumstances with the appropriate supporting documentation will be considered. Complete extension request procedure.

What is an extenuating circumstance?

An extenuating circumstance is an event or hardship that would lead you to request an application extension, to reschedule or cancel an exam at no extra charge, or to request an extension to your recertification cycle. More details here.

Since my current application has expired and I have not yet taken the exam, am I able to transfer my paid exam fee to another application?

Unfortunately, your paid exam or exam rewrite fee cannot be transferred to your next application. Therefore, you have 12 months from the day IIBA received your exam payment to request a refund. After such time, your exam or exam rewrite fee payment will become non-refundable. To request a refund of your exam or exam rewrite fee, please e-mail  Please include a reason for your refund request.

How can I include work experience in the application that involves sensitive or company proprietary information?

Indicate in the description field for the project that it involves sensitive company information and then provide only as much information as possible without breaching the privacy.

If I have my ECBA™ and would like to pursue the CCBA® designation similarly, if I have the CCBA® designation and would like to pursue the CBAP® designation, can I reuse previously entered work experience and/or professional development hours?

You will be able to reuse the work experience and professional development from your past certification application provided they meet the eligibility requirements for the next level.

Eligibility Requirements

What is Professional Development?

Professional Development refers to training and/or education that will assist you in further developing your skills and/or knowledge for a given area.

Are Professional Development hours (or Contact Hours in the application), the same as Professional Development Units (PDUs)?

IIBA does not use or refer to Professional Development Units (PDUs) instead, we use the term Professional Development hours (or PD hours). When applying online, you enter in your professional development hours in the Contact Hours field. Please note: 1 hour of Professional Development = 1 Contact Hour.

Will IIBA verify professional development or work experience?

Applicants and recipients may be randomly selected for audit to validate work experience, professional development and other information provided when they apply and/or recertify.

For ECBA, what qualifies towards the Professional Development requirement?

ECBA professional development can consist of any of the following activities:

  • Classroom and online courses (e.g. EEP endorsed courses )
  • Webinars - live or recorded (e.g. IIBA Webinars)
  • Conference track sessions, tutorials, keynotes & workshops
  • Chapter events (i.e. presentations, study groups, workshops, conference days)
  • Self -directed learning (i.e. reading/reviewing the BABOK® Guide v3.0)

Important Note: The content of these professional development activities must be aligned with the BABOK® Guide v3.0.

For CCBA and CBAP, how do I know if a course qualifies towards the Professional Development requirement?

For a course to qualify towards the Professional Development requirement, it must meet the following criteria:

  • It must be moderated/facilitated similar to a formal course (i.e., there must be a moderator for the session, or a facilitator/instructor who leads the group/individual through the material).
  • There must be a measurable learning objective (or set of objectives), and those must be directly applicable to the role of the business analyst (i.e., in terms of either changing behavior or improving skills).
  • It cannot simply be a presentation on a specific topic:
  • There must be the opportunity for students to interact with the material (e.g., be able to ask questions, make the learning meaningful)
  • An opportunity to practice the task or objective being presented and, be assessed by the facilitator/moderator.
  • The subject matter must be directly aligned with the BABOK® Guide.
  • To qualify, courses must also be completed by the application submitted date.

All courses that are part of our Endorsed Education Provider (EEP™) program automatically qualify towards the professional development requirement for the certificate or for any certification. This is because they have already been assessed and validated by IIBA to ensure they meet the above criteria.

To verify if any courses already taken are a part of our Endorsed Education Provider (EEP™) program, you can perform a search on our website.

Do online courses hold as much weight as classroom courses to meet the professional development requirement?

Online courses hold the same weight as classroom courses for the Professional Development (PD) requirement. All courses, whether classroom or online, must meet the professional development criteria for the certification level within the handbook, and you must be able to provide proof of taking the course in case your application is selected for random audit.

I am currently teaching business analysis workshops and during most workshops, I coach/mentor participants on their real world projects, performing a wide range of business analysis consulting services. This is above and beyond in-class course discussions. Can I count this time towards the work experience requirement for certification and how do I document it?

Delivering training and general coaching during a training session is considered part of the training being delivered and therefore, cannot be counted as work experience for certification. However, follow-up coaching and consulting outside of the training course for a participant’s specific work situation would count.

The best way to document this, since this type of work may be provided across various organizations is to combine all hours into one project. For the contact information, you will need to provide the name of a person at your organization that can verify that (1) you provide this service to course participants and (2) the number of hours you generally spent providing this service.

Will the BABOK Guide chapters on Perspectives and/or Underlying Competencies be tested for in the certification exams?

There will not be specific exam questions that test on the Perspectives or Underlying Competencies sections.

How many references do I need, and what conditions do they need to meet?

To complete the application, you must receive two reference endorsements from either a career manager, client (internal or external), or CBAP® recipient. When two references are added to your application, an e-mail from IIBA is sent to them with a link to an endorsement form.

These references must meet the following conditions:

  • At least one of the references must be a current contact.
  • All references must have known the applicant for at least six months.
  • A career manager is defined by IIBA as the person who is responsible for providing and preparing the applicant’s annual performance review.
  • Project managers cannot be references unless they are also the applicant’s career manager. The reference form must clearly indicate they fill both roles or the reference will not qualify.
  • Only two references will be assessed during the application assessment process.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the references submits their forms and do any necessary follow-up so that one can submit their application.

How much time is needed to prepare for the exams and how does one best prepare for the exams?

It really depends on the individual. The following, however, are some exam preparation tips:

  • Study the BABOK® Guide for the Core BA certifications or the Agile Extension for the Agile Analysis Certification (and their referenced sources).
  • Reviews sample exam questions.
  • Review IIBA Guide to Competency-Based Certification for Core BA certifications or ebook guide for the Agile Analysis Certification.
  • Attend training courses by IIBA Endorsed Education Providers (EEP™) in those areas you feel that additional knowledge would help benefit your study efforts.
  • Use online resources.
  • Use practice exams online as this simulates the environment in which you'll be tested.
  • Use Study Prep books, which are widely available.
  • Discuss chapters with study partners when studying. Use plenty of examples to provide context where needed.
  • Attend events hosted and/or study groups held by an IIBA Chapter in your area. This may not always be possible, but they may be very helpful with study preparation. Study groups can help with your understanding by leveraging other’s experience to provide context.
  • Rely on your work experience if applicable to get you through it. Don’t simply memorize definitions, content, or the BABOK® Guide. You need to partner the BABOK® Guide or Agile Extension with your experience to be successful.

Note: IIBA does not, in any way, represent that completing the above guarantees success at passing a certificate or certification exam.

We are currently reviewing providers to provide training support for our staff seeking certification. Would you have any suggestions on such training providers?
