Are you a business analysis professional who is fascinated by the power of the backlog and “deciding precisely what to build”?

Are you concerned about complying with different privacy requirements and handling data with care and respect?

Have you ever wondered which competencies and knowledge areas are vital to the success of modern organizations, and the tools and techniques that make them so integral?

Unpacking the latest insights in business analysis, the summer 2023 issue of BAM! addresses all these questions and many more, providing guidance for business analysis professionals at any stage of their career—directly from business analysis professionals themselves.

This latest issue explores the importance of data privacy, backlog management, requirements engineering, and how business analysis tasks align with the waterfall methodology.

Here’s a Look at What's Inside

Protecting personal data is top of mind for business analysist, software designer, and freelance journalist Christiane Vandepitte and IT journalist Guy Kindermans in the feature article, Safeguarding Personal Data in Today’s Business World.

Using the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as their compass, they conclude that an awareness of the privacy laws that apply to your organization’s activities is a vital responsibility of business analysis professionals. The key is to prioritize. Start with local and national laws and always try to aim for gold standard compliance.

Next up is Introducing the Rock Crusher by Steve Adolph, PhD, Agile coach, and senior consultant at cPrime, Inc., an explanation of a new model for flow-based backlog management that is also the subject of his new book, co-authored by Shane Hastie and Ryland Leyton.

Accompanied by a detailed infographic, the article details the model’s key elements and its “village” of seven roles (categorized as either accountable, responsible, or supporting) in the backlog management process. Offering an agile approach to backlog management, the Rock Crusher highlights the power and simplicity of this essential tool in modern agile organizations. Thought leader, author, and Noble Inc. director Howard Podeswa makes a case for the importance of the requirements engineering/business analysis competencies for successful agile organizations, in Why Agile Organizations Need Requirements Engineering.

Howard peppers his article with personal anecdotes, illuminating statistics, and critical concepts to shed light on the valuable role that requirements engineering plays in focusing business efforts on the highest value work. With a strong requirements engineering competency in the mix, teams can spend more of their time working on the things that really matter.

Rounding out the issue is a look at how business analysis tasks and knowledge areas intersect with the waterfall methodology. In Aligning Business Analysis Knowledge Areas with Waterfall Phases, senior business analyst Diane Donnelly, CBAP, carefully maps how the work of a business analysis professional aligns with each waterfall project phase. Integrating these tasks throughout a project’s lifecycle is crucial to achieving the best results and maintaining flexibility should business needs change.

As the business analysis profession continues to evolve amid rapid change in business and society, we will continue to bring you community-curated content that speaks to the unique challenges and opportunities you face. We hope you find the insights they contain inspiring, informative, and above all relevant to the important work you do each day.
