(Formerly Certification Handbook)

IIBA's multi-level competency based certification program recognizes the BA professional through their career progression, supporting more opportunities for growth and development.

What is Competency-Based Certification?

The certification program encourages professionals to develop a career in business analysis, and provides the ability to acknowledge milestones in their career and map their career alongside the BA certification progression.

This section supports IIBA's Multi-level Competency-Based Certification program by highlighting the key competency components associated with each business analysis task. This will allow you to identify areas of focus to promote your professional development in business analysis.

Who should use this guide

This guide should be used by:

  • Experienced practitioners.

  • Individuals interested in pursuing a career in business analysis.

  • Hiring managers who want to identify the competency levels for IIBA certification designations.

  • The competency components provide a clear differentiation between certification levels and enable the BA professional to seek specific learning and development to support them in achieving the desired level.

BA professionals have an opportunity to grow and develop in their profession and to be recognized for that growth and development from the start of their career through to retirement.

The competency elements are grouped into six Knowledge Areas, as defined in the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide).

Definitions of skill and knowledge levels used in this guide:

  • Recommends actions: Although generally works independently on smaller, well scoped challenges, still relies on expert help for more complex work. Skills, knowledge and confidence have developed to the level where appropriate actions are identified.
  • Applied knowledge: Has practiced the competency and skills have evolved working on small, less complex challenges or with guidance on large, more complex work.
Level 3 (CBAP) - Expert:
  • Creates rules: Actively provides insight to situations that fall within and outside of his/her domain or sphere of influence. In some cases, this will mean addressing new, unstructured business challenges or opportunties.
  • Guides practice: This is a seasoned practitioner that is sought after for their expertise and guidance in solving or addressing business challenges or opportunities.
  • Advanced knowledge: Skills and Knowledge have been fully developed through execution of work ranging from small well-scoped work to addressing more complex, unstructured challenges or opportunities. Skills and knowledge required for the competency have become second nature.
