These days, data has become essential for decision-making and strategy. Business data analytics (BDA) is crucial in transforming raw data into actionable insights, enabling organizations to enhance their processes, improve customer experiences, and stay ahead of the competition. IIBA’s 2024 Global State of Business Analysis Report explores the growing adoption of BDA practices and the field’s key skills. It also looks at how organizations are using data analytics for continuous improvement.

As organizations recognize the importance of data-driven decision-making, the adoption of BDA practices has been steadily increasing. According to Part 2 of the report, 63% of organizations have already embraced BDA, while 37% have yet to. This growing trend reflects the recognition of BDA as a key component for business success.

Organizations using BDA practices are benefiting from more informed decisions, better strategic planning, and a competitive market edge. However, the 37% that aren’t doing so risk falling behind, missing out on valuable data-driven insights.

The Crucial Skills for Success in Business Data Analytics

To effectively use BDA, professionals must have a unique blend of skills that combines technical expertise with critical thinking and communication abilities. The report highlights the skills that are most important in the role:

  • Problem-solving: The ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems is paramount in BDA. Analysts must be able to interpret data and use it to address business challenges effectively.
  • Communication: Clear and concise communication is essential for conveying insights to stakeholders. Analysts need to translate complex data into understandable narratives that drive decision-making.
  • Creative thinking: Innovation and creativity are vital for finding new ways to analyze data and uncover hidden patterns. Creative thinking allows analysts to approach problems from different angles and generate innovative solutions.
  • Data literacy: A strong understanding of data concepts, including data collection, processing, and interpretation, is crucial for any data analyst. Data literacy enables analysts to work confidently with data and make informed decisions.
  • Organizational knowledge: Familiarity with the organization's processes, goals, and industry context enhances the relevance and impact of data analysis. Analysts who understand their organization's unique needs can tailor their insights to align with business objectives.
  • Specialized skills in SQL, statistics, data visualization, and data storytelling: Technical skills such as SQL, statistical analysis, and data visualization are fundamental to BDA. Additionally, the ability to tell compelling data stories helps share insights meaningfully.
  • Facilitation: Facilitating discussions and workshops is important for gathering input, aligning teams, and ensuring that data-driven decisions are implemented effectively.
  • Leadership and influencing: As BDA grows in popularity, so does the importance of leadership and influencing skills. Analysts must advocate for data-driven decisions and influence stakeholders to act on their insights.
