Embarking on a new journey can be intimidating, particularly when you’re venturing into uncharted territory. For me, it was a challenge to master French in just one year, and it seemed unrealistic to many people I spoke to.

This is the story of how I embraced the challenge and applied my business analysis skills to achieve success, using Analysis Everywhere as inspiration.

Defining Changes Using Strategy Analysis

The decision to learn French came out of personal necessity and the desire to provide my children with access to a multicultural education. As a mother of two, I’m deeply committed to helping them achieve their goals.

As they grew older, I wanted to give them the option of studying in an international community, specifically in Canadian schools. Here, they could develop their language skills and immerse themselves in a multicultural environment.

Soon it became clear that I needed to learn French and pass a language test within a year to help them access Canadian education. Without French, my children couldn’t live in Canada and benefit from its educational system. This challenge created an urgent need for me to learn the language.

This is akin to a business facing a critical challenge that requires immediate and strategic action. Just as businesses rely on business analysis professionals to identify, plan, and implement solutions to meet urgent needs, I thought, so must I use my business analysis skills to tackle the challenge of learning French.

Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring

I successfully transformed a seemingly large obstacle into attainable objectives by developing a work plan based on business analysis and integrating language acquisition techniques influenced by Stephen Krashen's theory.

In addition to this, I incorporated assessment methods to monitor my performance continuously. This approach allowed me to make real-time modifications to my language acquisition, yielding the best possible learning results.

Most importantly, I created a plan for stakeholder engagement. I realized that mastering a language can’t be done alone, so I identified the types of stakeholders who could support me. This list included language tutors, native speakers, and fellow learners.

Engaging with these stakeholders through regular conversations, feedback sessions, and collaborative learning activities was crucial. By using their insights and support, I was able to enhance my learning process and stay motivated throughout my journey.

Elicitation and Collaboration

During the elicitation phase, I fully immersed myself in the French language, implementing specific techniques to execute my stakeholder engagement plan. I also gathered essential information for my language acquisition initiative.

Recognizing the pivotal role of collaboration in language learning, I engaged with many of my stakeholders by joining diverse language groups, participating in discussions, and creating opportunities for collaborative learning experiences. This fostered an environment of shared knowledge and support, significantly enhancing my language-learning journey.

Engaging with stakeholders not only provided me with diverse learning resources but also fuelled continuous improvement and motivation throughout the process.

Requirements Life Cycle Management (RLCM)

Learning a language involves managing various requirements that must be traced, maintained, prioritized, and approved.

For example, when acquiring a new word, I need to understand its meaning, usage, context, pronunciation, and more. Mastering a language involves effectively addressing each requirement over time, even if not all aspects are learned simultaneously.

Managing my linguistic requirements ensured a comprehensive and successful language-learning experience.

Requirements Analysis and Design Definition

Learning a language is a process, one that isn’t usually linear. As part of my requirements analysis and design, I focused on transforming my language needs into practical solutions. This involved identifying gaps in my language proficiency and aligning my learning strategy with specific objectives.

I first assessed my skills in vocabulary usage, writing, pronunciation, and tone against my desired proficiency level. This iterative approach helped me tailor my learning methods, adapt my study routines, and refine my language acquisition strategies accordingly. I ensured that each step I took contributed to achieving my language goals by continuously evaluating and adjusting my path.

Solution Evaluation

During my journey, I realized that my initial level of proficiency was just the beginning. It was like taking a first exam, which gave me a glimpse of my potential while revealing my limitations. It helped me identify the crucial skills I needed to build a strong foundation for my future language proficiency. As I progressed, my proficiency level increased, and it was like a pilot release. Although I still had some limitations, I was able to overcome challenges and assess my effectiveness.

After 11 months of dedication, I finally achieved full proficiency in French—it was like an operational release that effectively met my communication objectives. This was a significant milestone. It meant that my French language acquisition project requirements were successfully implemented in the production environment, a huge success!
