The History of IIBA
Since 2003, the International Institute for Business Analysis™ (IIBA®) has supported professionals working in business analysis and related business roles by maintaining global standards for the practice and certification, our Chapters and through professional development and career resources, networking and volunteer opportunities.
IIBA is a member organization of the Federation of Enterprise Architecture Professional Organizations (FEAPO).
2020's
2020
In 2020, IIBA released Certificate in Cybersecurity Analysis (IIBA®-CCA) developed with IEEE Computer Society to offer a robust learning and certification program. IIBA releases interactive edition of BABOK® online for members-only. This is the 10th anniversary of the Global Corporate Program.
2010's
2019
In 2019, IIBA released the Certification in Business Data Analytics (IIBA®-CBDA) recognizing a business analysis professional’s ability to effectively execute data analysis related work in support of business analytics initiatives. IIBA launches podcasts and Analyst Catalyst biweekly blogs. The Academic program was relaunched again in October 2019 to offer
2018
IIBA launches our 2018-2020 strategic plan and strategy framework. This year, we celebrate our 15th anniversary. We released our first specialized certification. The Agile Analysis Certification (IIBA® - AAC) strengthens your skills and expertise, focusing on applying an agile perspective within a business analysis framework. The Global Thought Leadership program introduces a 9-part whitepaper series on digital transformation. IIBA migrated our backend systems and website to new platforms to enhance user experience.
2017
In August 2017, IIBA and the Agile Alliance released version 2 of the Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide and IIBA introduced a new global thought leadership program. By this time IIBA has 29,000 members 300+ corporate members, 120+ Chapters and 50+ EEPs. Enhancements to the Academic program were launched in September 2017. The EEP program was also relaunched in August 2017.
2016
IIBA released a new multi-level, competency-based certification framework which recognizes increasing levels of maturity along the BA career path. To support the entry level practitioner, IIBA introduced the Entry Certificate in Business Analysis™ (ECBA™). Covering foundational knowledge on how to approach business analysis. We introduced a new association management software (AMS) platform and over 100 Chapters successfully migrated to a new Chapter website platform. IIBA membership connected 29.000 members 117 Chapters and over 290 Corporate Members.
2015
IIBA launched our 2015-2017 strategic plan focused on supporting the broad discipline of business analysis and BA professionals. In April 2015, IIBA launched BABOK® Guide v3 and the BABOK perspectives webinar series. IIBA launches annual publication, BA Lens a membership magazine.
2014
In 2014, IIBA connected over 28,000 Members, over 110 Chapters and over 220 Corporate Members. The focus was on reshaping the organization for future growth, with new leadership, new resources for Members and Chapters, and new defined portfolios for products and services. In November 2014, IIBA launched a new strategic plan that was developed to provide a framework to guide IIBA’s direction and the necessary action to provide additional support and value to the organization’s Members, Chapters, Partners and other Stakeholders.
2013
IIBA celebrated our 10th anniversary. Our focus was on providing tools and resources to help members take their careers to the next level. This year, IIBA introduced the Business Analysis Competency Assessment™ allowing BAs to evaluate their abilities against the standard skills in the profession. We also released the Business Analyst Career Road Map, identifying the many roles within business analysis and showing the different options available based on a BA’s experience. In July 2013, IIBA and the Agile Alliance release the Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide version 1. The Guide describes business analysis areas of knowledge, their associated activities and tasks, and the skills necessary to be effective in their execution within the framework of agile software development.
2012
To continue to grow the organization and gain even greater recognition for the business analysis profession, IIBA introduced the Global Community of Practice (GCOP). The purpose of the GCOP was to engage every member of the BA community who cares about the success of the profession in order to move it forward. IIBA facilitated this initiative by creating a consistent message around the products and services offered by the association. This year, IIBA reached 25,000 members worldwide.
2011
IIBA membership reached 16,000. Business Analysis professionals developed the Business Case for Business Analysis, a key tool in the BA toolkit, to demonstrate to leadership in their organizations how important business analysis is to a company's success. To further support practitioners we launched Certification of Capability in Business Analysis™ (CCBA®) for business analysis practitioners with two to three years’ experience. The working group of the Agile Extension approached IIBA and the Agile Alliance for funding and the guide became a joint program of the two organizations. The Academic program for colleges and universities was launched for academic faculty at accredited colleges and universities.
2010
Our focus this year was on engaging business analysts from around the world. An important initiative to achieve this was the introduction of the Global Membership Program designed to make IIBA more accessible to all business analysts. Membership jumped to more than 11,500 members. We also continued to work towards gaining recognition from companies across all industries about the value of the BA role with the launch of the Global Corporate Program which began with 30 members. This year the Introduction to the Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide was released for feedback and volunteer work began on clarifying the structure and initial contents of the Extension.
2000's
2009
Our focus in 2009 was on building awareness of the value of business analysis. We wanted to help organizations understand how business analysis can help them do business better, and to spread the word about how IIBA can help organizations improve their BA practices. This year work began on the Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide. Our membership grew to over 7,700 members.
2008
Our focus was on publishing A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide), implementing our certification program, and putting in place the organizational infrastructure to continue to grow IIBA. In 2008, our membership grew to more than 5,000 members. In 2008, our main goal was to help the Chapters improve their operations and remain viable.
2007
To ensure stability, IIBA put in place key processes and procedures to ensure the long-term viability of the organization. Membership grew to over 3,500 members.
2006
IIBA moved beyond North America to expand our Chapter network into Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. We were able to spread our wings and truly became a global organization that year, expanding to more than 2,300 members. The Certified Business Analysis Professional™ (CBAP®) designation was released for seasoned business analysis professionals who have over five years of practical business analysis work experience. IIBA introduced the Endorsed Education Provider (EEP™) program for training providers.
2005
IIBA had grown to 181 members. Work was underway to deliver A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) and the Certified Business Analysis Professional™ (CBAP®) designation.
2004
In March 2004, IIBA was born! IIBA went from being a working group with a name, to a formal organization incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. At our first Annual General Meeting in March of that year we had 37 members. Our first major deliverable was to participate in the inaugural BA World Conference in Toronto, Canada.
2003
The inaugural meeting of IIBA® was held on October 29, 2003 in Toronto, Canada with 28 founding members from 21 different organizations.
