Celebrating 15 Years of Making Change Happen

Since 2003, the International Institute of Business Analysis™ (IIBA®), a professional association has been dedicated to supporting business analysis professionals in delivering better business outcomes. IIBA connects almost 30,000 members, over 100 Chapters, and more than 500 training, academic, and corporate partners around the world. As the global voice of the business analysis community, IIBA supports recognition of the profession, networking and community engagement, standards and resource development, and comprehensive certification programs.


IIBA launches our 2018-2020 strategic plan and strategy framework. This year, we celebrate our 15th anniversary. We released our first specialized certification for Agile Analysis and introduced a 9-part whitepaper series on digital transformation. IIBA also migrated our backend systems and website to new platforms to enhance user experience.


IIBA released version 2 of the Agile Extension to the BABOK Guide and introduced a new global thought leadership program. IIBA has 29,000 members 300+ corporate members, 120+ chapters and 50+ EEPs.


IIBA released a new multi-level, competency-based certification framework which recognizes increasing levels of maturity along the BA career path. We introduced a new association management software (AMS) platform and over 100 Chapters successfully migrated to a new Chapter website platform. IIBA membership connected 29.000 members 117 Chapters and over 290 Corporate Members.


IIBA launched our 2015-2017 strategic plan focused on supporting the broad discipline of business analysis and BA professionals. In April 2015, IIBA launched BABOK® Guide v3 and the BABOK perspectives webinar series.


In 2014, IIBA connected over 28,000 Members, over 110 Chapters and over 220 Corporate Members. The focus was on reshaping the organization for future growth, with new leadership, new resources for Members and Chapters, and new defined portfolios for products and services.

In November 2014, IIBA launched a new strategic plan that was developed to provide a framework to guide IIBA’s direction and the necessary action to provide additional support and value to the organization’s Members, Chapters, Partners and other Stakeholders. 


IIBA celebrated our 10th anniversary. Our focus was on providing tools and resources to help members take their careers to the next level. This year, IIBA introduced the Business Analysis Competency Assessment™ allowing BAs to evaluate their abilities against the standard skills in the profession. We also released the Business Analyst Career Road Map, identifying the many roles within business analysis and showing the different options available based on a BA’s experience.


The First 5 Years 2003 - 2007


The inaugural meeting of IIBA® was held on October 29, 2003 in Toronto, Canada with 28 founding members from 21 different organizations. 


In March 2004, IIBA went from being a working group with a name, to a formal organization - IIBA was born! At our first Annual General Meeting in March of that year we had 37 members. Our first major deliverable was to participate in the inaugural BA World Conference in Toronto, Canada.


IIBA had grown to 181 members. Work was underway to deliver A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) and the Certified Business Analysis Professional™ (CBAP®) designation. 


IIBA moved beyond North America to expand our chapter network into Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. We were able to spread our wings and truly became a global organization that year, expanding to more than 2,300 members.


To ensure stability, IIBA put in place key processes and procedures to ensure the long-term viability of the organization. Membership grew to over 3,500 members.
