What is the career path for a business analyst? The following Career
Roadmap
articulates the various levels that a BA can achieve and aligns with the
five levels
described within the IIBA® Business Analysis Competency
Model.
Entry Level
- New to the role and has acquired knowledge through previous
exposure,
training and through the BABOK®
Guide.
Junior
- Limited practical experience in business analysis and uses knowledge
gained through some
practical role experience, training and through the
BABOK® Guide.
Intermediate
- Years of practical experience in business analysis and works
independently in complex situations and
tasks.
Senior
- Deep practical experience in business analysis with repeated
practice performing in a variety of
complex situations.
Advanced Generalist
- Performs a wide variety of business analysis activities using a
range of techniques in
varying circumstances at a more senior level in the organization.

The Essential Business Analysis Skills
The IIBA Competency Model identifies 53 performance or discipline
competencies specific
to the role of the business analyst. The underlying competencies

business analysis, and are essential for effective performance at any
level of experience. They are:
